The Apostleship of Prayer promotes individual consecration by the Morning Offering. The Morning Offering is a giving of oneself wholly to God, asking that the will of God may be done in all things. Such an offering turns all we do into service to God, with particular emphasis on four things we offer: our prayers, works, joys, and sufferings. We offer all, not just for ourselves, but for others.
Our sufferings have a special merit to repair (or make reparation for) the damages caused by sin. Jesus' suffering and death on the cross atoned (made reparation) for the sins of the whole world once and for all. Yet his act of infinite sacrifice at a particular time and place penetrates all time and all places. As his followers, baptized into his Church, his Body, we participate in his suffering. At the Mass, where Jesus' sacrifice is re-presented in the Eucharist, we unite with him in a real way. Our response to his gift of self is to give ourselves to him. In this way the Morning Offering is profoundly Eucharistic. In the Spirit of Christ we offer ourselves to God for the good of all.
Our traditional Morning Offering prayer specifies several purposes for the individual consecration:
1. The intentions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
2. The salvation of the world
3. Reparation for sin
4. The reunion of all Christians
5. The intentions of our bishops
6. The intentions of all Apostles of Prayer
7. The particular monthly intentions of our Holy Father
Here are two prayers of daily offering, the first approved in 2008 by the general director, Fr. Adolfo Nicolás, S.J., and his delegate to the international Apostleship of Prayer, Fr. Claudio Barriga, S.J. The second prayer is the traditional Morning Offering which has been used with modifications for over a century. We encourage you to use any offering prayer you find meaningful. Over the centuries the saints have used a great variety of prayers to consecrate themselves to God each day. We provide additional samples of daily offering prayers in our Prayer Library.
Daily Offering
God, our Father, I offer You my day.
I offer You my prayers, thoughts, words, actions, joys, and sufferings
in union with Your Son Jesus' Heart, who continues to offer Himself in the Eucharist for the salvation of the world.
May the Holy Spirit, Who guided Jesus, be my guide and my strength today so that I may witness to Your love. With Mary, the mother of our Lord and of the Church, I pray especially for this month's intentions
as proposed by the Holy Father.
Traditional Daily Offering
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world.
I offer them for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart: the salvation of souls, reparation for sin, and the reunion of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions of our bishops and of all Apostles of Prayer, and in particular for those recommended by our Holy Father this month.
